Fissure Sealants

Fissure sealants or dental sealants refers to a plastic which the dentist bonds into the grooves of the chewing surface of a tooth as a means of helping to prevent the formation of tooth decay (cavities).

Tooth decay is caused by the white film that forms on a persons teeth, dentists refer to this film as PLAQUE. The longer PLAQUE remains on a tooth’s surface the more likely it will be able to create a cavity. The idea behind brushing teeth is that the PLAQUE that has accumulated on a tooth’s surface is scrubbed off.

Some teeth however, especially molars, are difficult for a person to clean because the grooves in the chewing part of the tooth (pits and fissures) are deep and narrow. Even though the person brushes they can not clean the PLAQUE off adequately because the bristles of their toothbrush are literally too large to gain access into the bottom of the tooth’s grooves. Because some PLAQUE is not cleaned off a cavity can develop.

At Elite Dental our dentist can combat this situation by bonding a flowable plastic (fissure sealant) into the grooves of a tooth. The net result is that the surface of the tooth is somewhat flatter and smoother. There are no longer any places on the chewing part of the tooth that the bristles of a toothbrush cant reach and clean. Since PLAQUE can be removed more easily and effectively, there is much less chance that decay will start.

Hygiene

Caring for your teeth properly is vital if you want their natural life to be as long as yours.

But sometimes, however well you care for your teeth and gums, you will need extra help to keep them in top condition.

Our hygienist plays a vital role in this. Seeing the hygienist regularly helps you to take the best possible care of your teeth and gums so that you can avoid problems caused by decay and gum disease. Gum disease usually goes unnoticed by sufferers until the later stages, but it is the biggest cause of tooth loss in adults.

It is also important to visit us as often as we advice for regular routine examinations. These help us to spot potential problems early on, so we can nip them in the bud, saving you time, inconvenience and unnecessary expense.

We also offer a range of other preventative treatments, including fissure sealants for children, which help to combat decay on vulnerable back teeth.

Hygienist

Our hygienist is professionally trained to treat gum disease. She has the time to make your teeth as spotlessly clean as possible. Her skills and knowledge can stop bleeding gums and bad breath and help you back to good dental health.

Regular ongoing visits to the hygienist are important in our programme of preventive dentistry. She also administers fluoride applications and fissure sealants to children and provides diet advice.

Toothbrushing - Brushing Technique:

  • Brush with a small, vigorous circular action or use an electric toothbrush.
  • Try and brush in an ordered sequence starting with the inside surfaces first as they are the most awkward to reach.
  • Move along one tooth at a time with the brush head angled 45 degrees towards the gum line to ensure nowhere is missed.
  • Be careful to brush right down to the gum level as this is where most plaque builds up.

Flossing Technique:

Step 1 - Use a ruler length piece of floss, wind floss around your middle fingers to keep it taut. Then place the floss over the tips of your first fingers to reach your back teeth

Step 2 - Floss your top front teeth by placing it over the tip of one finger and one thumb

Step 3 - Ease the floss between your teeth with a gentle sawing action and then clean with an up and down movement, ensuring you curve the floss round each side of each tooth and place the floss slightly below the gum line.

Mouthwashes:

Few people have such a thorough brushing and flossing routine that they would not benefit from the use of mouthwash. An excellent daily mouthwash can help eliminate food debris and bacteria that has not all been removed by brushing and flossing and can be very effective at combating bad breath.

Other mouthwashes are particularly helpful in preventing decay in those prone to recurrent problems or in treating acute gum infections when necessary.

Tongue Cleaning:

Tongue cleaning is an important part of your oral hygiene and fresh breath program. The back of the tongue is a reservoir for organisms that cause gum disease, tooth decay and bad breath. A tongue cleaner can be used to gently sweep this substance away to reduce the bacteria in your mouth and freshen your breath, alongside a retardex oral spray and mouth rinse.

Products:

We stock an extensive range of dental care products. Each item has been carefully rated, and we will be happy to advise on the best product for you. Here is a small selection.

Hygienist Appointment:

We offer a number of different hygiene fresh breath packages. With the best will in the world it is still difficult to eradicate plaque and prevent the build up of tartar completely. We strongly recommend visiting the hygienist for a professional dental cleaning session every 3 to 6 months. If you have had porcelain veneers or crown and bridgework you will need to attend our hygienist at least twice a year to extend your guarantee to up to 5 years.

The combination of food and bacteria in your mouth can cause decay, gum disease and bad breath.

It would be a great pity to suffer gum recession, or to lose teeth through gum disease because of long-term neglect to oral hygiene. It would equally be a shame to compromise the effect of an attractive smile with bad breath even in the short term.

Follow these daily steps to maintain a healthy mouth, fresh breath and to maximise the longevity of your smile.

Root Canal Treatment

If a tooth’s pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels becomes infected or damaged because of decay or injury, root canal treatment is often the only way to save your tooth and repair the damage. Endodontic treatment cleans out the infected pulp chamber and repairs the damage.

Root canal treatment is simply the removal of diseased or non-viable nerve and blood supply tissue from inside the tooth and roots.

  • An opening is made from the top of the tooth into the pulp chamber.
  • The canal openings is/are identified.
  • The canal(s) is/are shaped with progressively thicker files to remove diseased tissue. These files are smaller than a typical needle.
  • X-rays are taken to be sure we have reached the end of the canal(s).
  • The canal(s) are then shaped to allow access for filling material to seal the end of the tooth.
  • The canal(s) are sealed with Gutta Percha (a thermoplastic material) and a cement.
  • The tooth is built up for a crown or the opening is temporarily sealed. A crown will eventually be needed.

At Elite Dental we can offer you the very latest technique and technology for the Root Canal Treatment.

Bridges

Bridges are used to replace missing tooth. Why is this important? Because the missing tooth changes the look of your smile, your bite, and puts stress on surrounding teeth to compensate for the lost tooth teeth resulting in gaps between teeth, teeth being tilted forward and the tooth above the missing tooth space will grow (erupt) down into the tooth space. Because these teeth drift out of position, several conditions may occur;

Severe occlusal (bite) problems that could lead to clicking of the jaw, headaches, and jaw pain.

Hard to clean areas are created which will lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and bone loss.

A change in facial appearance.

What are dental bridges?

When you have one or more missing teeth, then a dental bridge may be used to restore the resulting gaps. The dental bridge is basically a false tooth, beautifully created from porcelain that fills the gap and is supported by adjacent teeth or implants.

One of the most crucial skills in the placement of a dental bridge is to create the illusion that the missing tooth emerges from gum just a natural tooth. Our skills in cosmetic dentistry, gum manipulation and our in-house implantologist can combine ensure no-one will know that you ever had a missing tooth!

There are several types of bridge:

1. Traditional Fixed Dental Bridge

Here the “false tooth” is fused between two porcelain crowns to fill the gap left by a missing tooth. There are two crowns holding it in place attached onto your teeth either side of the false tooth. This type of dental bridge can be used to replace one or more missing teeth.

2. Cantilever Dental Bridge

In areas of your mouth that are under less stress, such as your front teeth, a cantilever dental bridge may be used. A cantilever dental bridge is when the “false tooth” is only supported on one side. The result is just as aesthetic but has the benefit that fewer teeth have to be treated.

3. Resin Bonded Dental Bridges / Maryland Dental Bridge

The type of dental bridge is almost always used for your front teeth. The main benefit of this type of dental bridge is that healthy teeth either side need either minimal or no preparation. The “false tooth” is fused to metal or ceramic “wings” that are bonded very firmly to the supporting or “abutment” teeth with a resin. The wings are hidden from view so that only the porcelain, which appears just like a natural tooth, is visible.

4. Implant Supported Dental bridges

Implants are the modern way to replace missing teeth. An implant is placed in the bone where the tooth root would have originally been. When it has fused to the bone it can be restored with individual crowns or, when more than one tooth is missing, with an implant supported dental bridge. Even if you have no teeth in one or both jaws, implants can be placed and an implant supported dental bridge securely fixed.

Crowns

Crowns and Bridges refers to the restorations of natural teeth that have been damaged, decayed or lost.

A Crown can be made to restore an individual tooth damaged by decay or fracture back to its original form and function, while a Bridge is used to replace one or more missing tooth. A Crown, also called a cap, is usually placed because the remaining tooth structure is not capable of adequately supporting or retaining a regular filling. In addition, a crown will help hold together and support the remaining tooth structure, thus minimizing the chance that a tooth could fracture.

Constantly looking to improve our service Elite Dental Practice has invested in a new CEREC® 3D Crown System.

Cerec®3D

One Day - One Visit Dr Lida Fartash is proud to present her own in house Ceramic Studio, CEREC® 3D, here in Belfast.  With this advanced system, she can quickly restore damaged teeth, using permanent natural-coloured ceramic restorations.  These are anti-abrasive and plaque resistant. In about one hour Dr Lida Fartash can restore teeth such as Crowns and Veneers, using restorations that resemble the composition of natural tooth structure and without the need of impressions.  Cerec® 3D uses high quality ceramic materials and Computer Aided Design technology. This ground-breaking treatment ensures no second appointment will be necessary.

Why Patients Choose CEREC

CEREC is the world's only system for the fabrication of all ceramic dental restorations in one surgery visit. With CEREC at your dentist's side, you can be in and out in a single visit with a permanent, all ceramic crown, inlay, or veneer! For you, the patient, this means fewer injections, less drilling, no messy impressions and less time out of your hectic schedule. So, why are thousands of people world wide choosing the CEREC restorative technique for their dental needs?

Single Appointment Dental Care

Most dental restorative methods require more than one visit to the dentist. This means that on the first visit, you get an injection of anesthesia, your tooth prepared, an impression taken, and a temporary restoration put on your tooth. You make a second appointment for a couple of weeks later, get another injection, have the temporary pried off (if it hasn't fallen off already), and have a permanent restoration put on. Why go to the dentist a second time when you don't have to? With CEREC, the procedure is done in a single appointment, start to finish.

Finest Dental Materials

A CEREC tooth restoration isn't just convenient, it is also healthy. Many years ago, dentists had few options to repair decayed and damaged teeth other than amalgam, gold, and other metals. With CEREC, your dentist can use strong, tooth colored ceramic materials to restore your teeth to their natural strength, beauty, and function. These materials closely match the composition of natural tooth structure. This means when you eat hot food and then drink something cold, the restoration and tooth expand and contract at almost equal rates. So, your tooth does not hurt, and you can go on enjoying your evening. Also, the materials are chemically bonded to your tooth, so your dentist can save as much healthy tooth tissue as possible while providing you with a dental restoration that strengthens your tooth.

Smile Enhancement

Your dentist can use CEREC for more than just crowns and fillings. CEREC is capable of producing any single tooth restoration. Chipped or discolored front teeth can be repaired with beautiful CEREC ceramic front crowns or veneers. Your smile makes a lasting first impression. Enhance it with CEREC.

Worldwide, a CEREC restoration is placed every 20 seconds. With a history of nearly 20 years, this equipment has helped dentists place over 12 million restorations. Using metal free materials that are the closest to your natural enamel, CEREC gives you the highest quality restorative care. Ask your dentist today about single visit CEREC restorative care!

Fillings

Fillings are a type of dental restoration used to repair a tooth damaged by decay (caries). It is common for a tooth to have decay but not show any signs of discomfort or sensitivity.

With a filling, the decay is removed from the tooth and the cavity created is then prepared or shaped to accommodate a filling material. This preparation will ensure a proper seal and bonding of the material to the tooth.

Traditionally, there are three types of filling material (amalgam, composite and gold) and each has a different preparation requirements. Amalgam is a metallic grey, silver and mercury alloy which hardens or cures overtime after placement. Composite is a tooth coloured resin which is light cured after placement, and gold is a soft metal which is pressed into the cavity and forms a sealed restoration, as a result of this pressure placement, no curing is involved.

At Elite Dental we only offer amalgam free fillings to our private clients. This allows teeth to be filled and rebuilt, utilising more aesthetically acceptable materials such as composite resin.

Dental Implants

SPECIAL OFFER 10% off Implants

According to research nearly half of the U.K. population over 35 has lost at least one tooth due to trauma, decay or gum disease.

What is left is an unsightly gap which, at worst, could lead to bite problems, collapsing facial features and premature wrinkles. Implants are the closest thing that exists to natural tooth replacement.

A dental implant is a replacement for a missing tooth root. Implants can be used to improve the look of your teeth by closing unsightly gaps – one tooth or several teeth can be replaced in this way. In a number of cases the placement of implants has allowed patients to discard dentures which they had worn for many years. Implants can provide a permanent answer to tooth loss and will help restore a natural and confident smile.

Cosmetic Dentures

Losing your natural teeth can be both distressing and damaging to your health. It could affect your confidence in your smile as well as your ability to chew food or speak properly.

A denture replaces missing teeth and adjacent tissues. Unlike dental implants, a denture is removable. Made of resin and porcelain, complete dentures are used to replace all the teeth. When some healthy teeth remain, a partial denture can be used. A partial denture also keeps the remaining healthy teeth from shifting position in the mouth.

Dentures made by us at Elite Dental do more than replace the teeth, they are fit “neuromuscularly” meaning they are precision fit to provide the most optimum position for your jaw and bite, assuring comfort and are aesthetically beautiful. Full and partial dentures improve chewing ability and speech, they also support facial muscles as well as enhance appearance.
